Since the early 1980s, there has been a concerted effort to develop dyestuffs based on safer intermediates. Experts studying the toxicity of dyes are increasingly concerned with the types of materials used as dye intermediates.

Dyestuff industry plays an important role in the economic development of the country. The Dyestuff Industry, which was primarily started to cater to the needs of domestic textile industry, now not only meets more than 95% requirement of the domestic market, but has gradually also made a dent in the global market.

This industry is based on chemicals derived from coal tar and the petrochemical industry. This industry forms an important link in the chain of other chemical industry such as textiles, leather, plastic, paper, packaging, printing inks, paints and polymers etc. The textile industry is the major consumer of dyestuffs and about 70% of the total production is consumed by this sector. Next, the dye intermediates supplier will share the following content with you.

What is a Dye?

A dye is a type of small soluble colorant. Here, solubility means that the dye dissolves well in the binder or the application fluid, which can be water. Also, dyes are more transparent, allowing it to glaze over the material. Generally, dye molecules have elements which help to bind to the surface. These elements form either van der Waal’s forces, hydrogen bonds or even ionic bonds based on the characteristics of the substrate.

Furthermore, the part of the dye molecule responsible for the production of the color is known as the chromophore. Most dyes contain auxochromes, which are either basic or weakly acidic groups, increasing the color of the dye. Some dyes used in the textile industry are acid dyes, basic dyes, direct dyes, azoic dyes, sulfur dyes, etc.

What is a Pigment?

A pigment is an insoluble material ground into a fine powder used as a colorant. Here, as they are insoluble, pigments are suspended in the binder. Therefore, the binder is responsible for holding pigments in place on the material. Another two characteristic features of pigments are their opacity and low tinting strength. As they are opaque, pigments can completely cover color on the material. Here, the tinting strength refers to how well two colors mix with each other, fading their colors to each other.

Similarities between dyes and pigments

Dyes and pigments are two compounds that can give color to materials.

Therefore, they are called colorants.

In addition, both can be natural or synthetic.

They have various applications in the textile industry, printing, painting, candle making, etc.

Difference between dyes and pigments

Dyes are organic substances with intense color or fluorescence that impart color to a substrate by selectively absorbing light, while pigments are colored, black, white or fluorescent particles organic or inorganic solids that are usually insoluble and largely physically and chemically unaffected by the carrier or substrate into which they are incorporated. Thus, this is the main difference between dyes and pigments.

Applications of Dye Intermediates

Dye intermediates include petroleum downstream products that are further processed for conversion into finished dyestuffs and pigments. These dyestuff intermediates are used in different industrial sectors such as paints, printing inks, textiles, plastics, and paper. Besides, they are also important raw materials for direct dyes, acid dyes and reactive dyes. One of the major applications of these dye intermediates is in hair dyes.

In addition, dye intermediates are important raw materials for acid dyes, reactive dyes and direct dyes. The main application of dye intermediates is in hair dyes. The two widely used dye intermediates in hair dyes are p-phenylenediamine and p-toluenediamine.
